JPG, PNG or WebP: choose the right output

A format change can improve compatibility, but it cannot restore missing detail. Here is how to choose an output for a photo, screenshot, or transparent graphic.

Start with the receiving website

An upload form’s accepted formats matter more than a general recommendation. If it asks for JPG, use JPG even when another format could be smaller. JPG and JPEG name the same format; changing between those extensions is not a quality improvement. Renaming a .png file to .jpg does not convert its contents.

PixelPrep Tools re-encodes the picture into the selected output format. Keep the source file as your master, especially if it contains transparency, animation, or camera information that the new file will not preserve.

Convert without an accidental crop

  1. Add the original image. In the destination search, type a conversion such as “JPG to PNG” or “WebP to JPG” and choose Use this.
  2. For a format-only change, keep Output dimensions at 100%, leave Zoom at 100%, and avoid moving or rotating the image. Conversion destinations retain the source dimensions.
  3. Review the frame, then prepare the image. Check the result format, dimensions and visible details before downloading.
  4. Open the downloaded file in the application that will use it. Keep your original until you have confirmed the new copy works.

Why a JPG converted to PNG may be larger

A PNG copy can preserve the pixels it receives without applying another lossy JPG encode. But the source JPG may already have lost fine detail. Converting it cannot reconstruct that detail or undo compression blocks. The larger file is not evidence of a sharper image.

For a logo that started as JPG on white, converting to PNG also does not remove the white background. This tool does not cut out subjects or invent a transparent background. Existing transparency can be retained in suitable PNG or WebP conversions; JPG fills it with white. Full-image fit destinations can add white padding even with PNG or WebP output.

What this converter does not preserve

Outputs are still images. An animated GIF or animated WebP becomes one frame, not a converted animation. Multi-image camera files are not exported as an album. The browser creates a fresh image file rather than copying the source container.

Re-encoding removes common camera metadata, such as embedded location information. It does not hide addresses, faces, signatures, or other information visible in the picture, and the download name may include the original filename. Review both the image and its name before sharing.

Before you use the result

  • The receiving service accepts the chosen format.
  • Transparency or white padding looks as intended.
  • Fine text is readable at actual size.
  • The file opens after downloading, not just in the preview.
